Fiberglass decks:
With fiberglass decks you need to check for areas that are becoming "lighter" than the rest. Do a "thumb test", to see if there is any movement of the material when you push down. Movement is typically caused by moisture getting under the surface, even through a small pin hole, causing it to de-laminate.
While there are a lot of variables that cause decks to fail, the most common is weather conditions.
Fiberglass decks generally need to be re-coated every five years, but should be checked yearly. The edges need to be examined for possible hairline cracks, which may show up where metal corner bead has been installed. The hard surface of fiberglass makes it less likely for sharp objects to penetrate the surface, than with vinyl decks; however, if cracks are showing up on the seams it is time to resurface.
To clean fiberglass decks use soap and water with a stiff bristle brush, on a regular basis. Where there is a lot of algae or moss, a cleanser such as Vim® may be used. |
